In his damaged ship, the Master was exposed to the [[heart of the TARDIS]] which enabled an entity of his self-doubts to manifest, taking the form of the Third Doctor. The heart's energies gave the Master and the entity glimpses of possible futures in which he turned to desperate means to survive, even abandoning his Time Lord biology. The Master came to accept he would do anything to survive and used the heart to return to the universe, a feat Straxus believed impossible. The Master subsequently located Straxus and shot him.
