In an extended conversation with Linx, it's the Doctor who gives us all the exposition about the Rutan/Sontaran war. When Linx asks, "You've encountered our people before?" The Doctor says, "Unfortunately". Also, the Sontarans know of the Time Lords. Neither the Doctor nor Linx are at a disadvantage here.
