Popping in to say that I disagree with the suggestion that any kind of fourth wall break, especially one so minor, indicates a story lacks internal logic enough to say that it takes place in a reality. That's just a very silly argument to me, and again is indicative of why we shouldn't consider any "fourth wall break" to be immediately discluding because no one can define what a "fourth wall break" is. To me, it seems there are three kinds: actors breaking character, characters talking to the audience, and characters having moments of lucidity. To me, it seems there are three kinds: actors breaking character, characters talking to the audience, and characters having moments of lucidity. In all below debates, we've discussed exclusively the middle category, yet now I am supposed to buy that the otherwise inoffensive third category is also discluding? I think that's ridiculous.
