Michael, how does it defeat the purpose? The purpose of the exo-skeleton is to protect/save humans, i.e. their brains/consciousness, having certain amount of AI only means better protection. Can you imagine if certain part of the exo-skeleton malfunctioned or if the brain had a concussion and is in coma? The suit being able to protect itself/(the brain) or seek medical help is certainly more advantageous than just lying there in the middle of a battleground.
