: Koschei ''was'' the Master's name, but after the events of [[The Dark Path]] referred to himself as the Master, it isn't his nickname, it is his name.

:The Monk however refers to himself as Mortimus and it becomes established that that is ''his'' name. Also for the Monk there is the (possibility) that the name the Monk was never used by him (or even used by other characters as a name) on screen/in novels.

:: Or, to be more informal, if you say 'the Rani', most fans will say 'renegade Time Lord, played by Kate O'Mara, chemist, odd dress sense, Pip 'n' Jane' etc. Whereas if you say 'Ushas' the majority even of Dr Who fans will probably say 'who's that then?'
