The Quick Reads books were launched in 2006 as an effort by BBC Books, in conjunction with other partners, to promote reading. Although the cover design is the same as that of the full-length Doctor Who novels that have been published since 2005, the Quick Reads differ in that they are exclusively published in paperback at a lower cover price than the hardcovers, and they have a much lower page count, which puts them into the category of novellas (even though in some cases the page count actually exceeds that of many Target novelisations, which are considered novels).

All of the Quick Reads releases to date have fallen under the BBC New Series Adventures line it has yet to be announced whether the series will continue while the Eleventh Doctor novels are published. A 2010 Quick Read was released, but it was a Tenth Doctor novel. The earliest an Eleventh Doctor Quick Reads can be expected is in 2011.
