Outside ''[[Doctor Who]]'', Newark is perhaps best known for his role as Spooner in the popular sitcom ''Rising Damp''.


Early in his career, Derek Newark was a member of the Belgrade Theatre Company, whose members included Ian McKellan. Over the years, he  appeared in episodes of the television series ''Dixon of Dock Green'', ''Dad's Army,'' ''The Avengers,'' ''Rumpole of the Bailey,'' and ''Some Mothers Do 'Ave Em''.  He also had supporting roles in the television miniseries, ''Reilly: Ace of Spies,'' ''Masada,'' and ''War and Remembrance,'' and played a German officer in the film, ''Where Eagles Dare''.
