Director Eric Stahlmann, also spelt Eric Stahlman, was a version of Professor Eric Stahlman from a parallel universe visited by the Third Doctor.

Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]

Like his counterpart, Stahlmann, also spelt Stahlman, (PROSE: Inferno [+]Loading...["Inferno (novelisation)"]) was born in Germany and grew up during the Great Depression and the Nazi era.

Unlike his bearded counterpart in the primary universe, Stahlmann was clean-shaven and also wore dark-tinted glasses. He also spoke in a colder, cooler tone and was evidently pleased that Sir Keith Gold had died in a road accident.

In the 1970s, Stahlmann headed the Inferno Project conducted at Eastchester, aided by the Republican Security Forces, and like his prime universe counterpart was unconcerned by the risks involved. He became infected by Stahlmann's ooze and mutated into a Primord. He was killed by Greg Sutton with a fire extinguisher. (TV: Inferno)

Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • The Director's name is spelled STAHLMANN on his protective suit's nameplate. However, in the credits for episode five, as well as in the novelisation, it is written as "Director Stahlman". In The Face of the Enemy and I, Alastair, the nameplate variation of his name is confirmed as being the correct spelling for the Inferno Earth universe, implying the Inferno Earth's Stahlmann did not feel the need to Anglicise his surname from the original German spelling. At the top of page 129 of Doctor Who: The Book of Whoniversal Records by Simon Guerrier, published by BBC Books in 2017, there is a black-and-white photograph of the mutated Director Stahlmann, on which the second 'N' on the STAHLMANN nameplate has been mysteriously blacked out by what would appear to be a ballpoint pen.
