Talk:An Alien Werewolf in London (audio story)

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

Question[[edit source]]

I really need some help with the references here. I can only get so many. I have never watched the film "An American Werewolf in London" but it is on my list, so I'm sure I missed SEVERAL references to the film in this story. Also, despite being partially Australian, I think I missed quite a few Oz references. I think I got the main ones (Vegemite song is Down Under by Men at Work) but there's some weird ones which I think I missed. There's definitely hard-core UK ones I missed. I THINK Ace was talking about the soap Brookside at the beginning when she says "Sheila Banks met Brooky" (if I even heard her right?) but I need someone to double-check (I liked the story but I'm not in the mood to listen to it again for a while).

Also there are parts of the plot I just did not understand. If someone could go over that too it would help a lot.

Other references I did not get:

  • Ace mentions that Rohesia and Raymond own a nice Italian car. She called it a "maza bulgini Italian car" or something like that. I'm sure I completely butchered that but I'm not a car expert so I don't know brand names well outside "Ferrari" and "Lamborghini" to know what she is referring to.
  • There's a joke about the Doctor knowing someone who had a ferret in their trousers and then something about Hertfordshire. Whoosh over my head.
  • What DOES Ace mean when she says "The Sin Eater gets to get loaded!" once they free the Sin Eater? I know slang but I can't say I've heard this one in this context before or if I have, I've definitely forgot.

I don't have the story as I haven't read good reviews of the Mags trilogy, but the Brooky reference is almost certainly not a Brookside reference since there were no characters in it by either name. The reference to a man putting ferrets down his trousers is a reference to Sylvester McCoy, who used to do that for a living. Getting loaded might refer to getting money? I'm afraid I don't know the context. -- Saxon (✉️) 21:04, July 19, 2020 (UTC)
Thanks Jack "BtR" Saxon for the reply! Yes it's honestly been a rather disappointing trilogy. I didn't read reviews ahead of time because I really like Mags and was just excited to have some stories with her. I'll remove the Brookside reference then since we aren't certain. Thank you for letting me know about the Sylvester McCoy thing. Although I'm not sure how the Hertfordshire thing plays into it since it's mentioned immediately after (and it's DEFINITELY not related to the plot) so we still need to figure out that. Loaded is definitely not a money reference, although I thought that too. The context is that the Sin Eater has just been freed and is planning to go do stuff around Camden market with its new-found freedom and it runs off, then Ace says that line and runs after it while the Doctor and Mags depart for the TARDIS. If I'm being honest, many of the references don't even make sense WITH context, they just sort of throw them at you every couple seconds and it becomes easy to get lost, hence my trouble with whether I understood the plot or not. Anyway, thanks again for the help. If anything else comes to mind don't be a stranger, I'm following this page and always checking my talk page as well! It's important to note here that entries in the References section for story pages must contain a link to at least one page on this wiki (though it's fine for the link to be a redlink). Anything that doesn't contain a link, or is a plot point, or that is just an assumption, does not count for the References section. Basically anything in the References section must be mentioned or seen in the story in question. Shambala108 22:43, July 19, 2020 (UTC)

Forgot to add that entries should be simple sentences about the thing in question; users are supposed to click on the links to get more info. For example:
  • The Doctor mentions Stevie Wonder. Correct
  • The Doctor visits Stevie Wonder, an American singer who is blind and sings the songs blah blah blah... " Incorrect
