Talk:Aphasia

Merger[[edit source]]

There's currently an open discussion on Talk:Family of Blood in regards to changing the information on all members of the Family to portray them as Aubertides after Shadow of a Doubt (audio story) confirmed outright that they were the same race. However, I thought that the merger of 'Daughter of Mine' / Aphasia deserved its own discussion.

In Doubt we are told that Daughter of Mine's story has "occurred several times in many different ways". Bernice Summerfield asks DoM if she is sorry for what she did to her (recalling the events of Human Nature (novel)) and, according to Bernice, DoM explains "that was a different her". This confirms that somehow Daughter of Mine / Aphasia are the same individual, but different versions of that individual that may not even share memories (which is later compared to the Doctor's discovery of Ruth in The Shadow in the Mirror (webcast)). The events of Shadow in the Mirror also go on to draw further similarities between DoM and Aphasia. In the Human Nature novel, Aphasia could command the balloon to pursue and kill people - and in this story she prepares to "release [the balloon] to eat the Doctor's face".

One argument for the family not being Aubertides (and therefore DoM and Aphasia not being the same species) was that the Aubertides had a humanoid form while the Family of Blood were portrayed to be "gaseous". However, this can be seen as speculation - perhaps the family are only gaseous in their transition while consuming a body (similar to Cassandra O'Brien.Δ17 after using the psychographt). In Shadow in the Mirror, we're introduced to DoM's people who are said to be "linking in the great chains, sunning themselves on the rocks in their natural forms". This indicates that they are not gaseous.

I propose that each member of the Family of Blood's pages are edited to show that they are Aubertides, while a merger takes place between Aubris and Family of Blood's home planet. In regards to Daughter of Mine however, I am unsure if that page and Aphasia should be completely merged or if a third page should be created (similar to the Doctor's page which links to the two separate incarnations). I for one would opt for a simpler merge of both pages. Xx-connor-xX 02:32, April 27, 2020 (UTC)

If she says "that was a different her", how do you figure she's talking about herself? I don't know any of the stories in question, I'm just asking for clarification. Shambala108 02:55, April 27, 2020 (UTC)
Both stories are new and on YouTube (redacted by admin). Bernice identifies Daughter of Mine as "not quite" the girl who attacked her, but later comes to the realisation that they are the same individual and asks her to apologise for what she did to her. Daughter of Mine's story is said to have "occurred several times in many different ways" and that it was a "different her" that attacked Bernice. In both this story, and the sequel (redacted by admin) Daughter of Mine is compared to the Doctor being "a story that has happened in many times and in many different ways". Ok, but why would she say "different her" instead of "different me"? That's what is confusing me here. And you can't link to offsite videos on the wiki so I had to remove the links you posted (see Tardis:Video policy). Shambala108 03:21, April 27, 2020 (UTC)
I'm unsure as to why she said her over me, perhaps it was to distance herself from a past action, but nevertheless if we question that then we could start to question why they use names like Daughter of Mine over just daughter. And in the story Bernice doesn't believe her excuse either, having identified her outright as Aphasia. Xx-connor-xX 03:24, April 27, 2020 (UTC)
I can clarify this: the story is narrated by Bernice Summerfield, describing her conversation with the girl in the mirror. Benny's exact line is: "She tried to tell me that was a different her." If we saw the conversation outright, the girl would have said "That was a different me", but since it's Benny recounting it, of course the pronouns are different. – N8 (/👁️) 03:52, April 27, 2020 (UTC)
I was reading the words from my comments forgot that it was Bernice speaking (don't ask me how), hence not realising the reason for the change in pronouns. Thanks for that! Xx-connor-xX 04:01, April 27, 2020 (UTC)
If anyone is interested I have created a merged version in the sandbox. User:Xx-connor-xX/sandbox/Aphasia. Xx-connor-xX 13:50, April 27, 2020 (UTC)
