Talk:Iberian

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

Singular name[[edit source]]

"Iberians" is a singular name, not plural. "Iberian" would be referring to one individual member of the civilisation, but that isn't the case here. The singular civilisation overall is the Iberians.

This is proven by the fact that Wikipedia -- which, like TARDIS wiki, has a policy of keeping articles in singular, uses "Iberians." Kassilon 18:29, December 6, 2019 (UTC)

I changed the speedy rename to rename. Feel free to discuss. Shambala108 18:50, December 6, 2019 (UTC)
Well first off, we are not Wikipedia. "Dalek" is also covered in the singular, and that article is not about one particular Dalek, but in fact all of them. I will note, though, that we do use plural in the case of groups sometimes -- as in, the group (itself singular) has a plural name, referring to its multiple constituents. Examples include the United Nations, Transhuman Sisters of the Unholy Protocol, the Quiston Calcium Assassins, and the Masterbakers of Barastabon. Those have full names which cannot be faithfully rendered in singular. T:NAMING, where this rule is codified, uses the Beatles as an example, as well.
How pages under category:Human ethnic groups are covered right now is inconsistent, but those examples in plural turn out to be recent additions from this November, deviating from prior precedent (and indeed policy). I question why the Huns or Ostrogoths must be plural, when Turk and Time Lord get along just fine following T:NAMING to the letter. All those pages currently pluralised need to be renamed, really, unless there's sufficient reason to count ethnic groups among groups and organisations whose "official, legal names [...] are in plural form" necessarily.

All that to say, because we need to approach this from our own policies, and not those of Wikipedia or any other community, their 2015 decision (or any others made) has no bearing on the stance we take here. And as T:NAMING briefly explains, we use singular for nearly all article names, and only plural when we must, as in the case where there is no "The Beatle", or "United Nation" taken as singular, to cover. Suggestions to change T:NAMING with regards to "ethnic groups" ideally should be brought to the forums, as this would affect multiple pages.
