Talk:Instruments of Darkness (novel)

Removal of speculation[[edit source]]

When I encountered it, article contained the following "explanation" for the statement that this story is in conflict with Thicker Than Water:

That said, if one were to take the view that the Time Lords lifted Mel out of time (to give evidence at the Doctor's trial) shortly after Instruments of Darkness, then her resultant memory loss (precedent for which was set in Trial) might explain why she isn't able to recall Evelyn in Thicker Than Water. Evelyn's memory is trickier to explain.

First of all, we don't do this sort of speculative explanation on story pages. That's what Theory:Discontinuity index is for. Second, this little theory is just wrong because the precedent suggested in Trial doesn't exist, and because it doesn't account for Spiral Scratch at all. Plus any theory which doesn't account for Evelyn's memory isn't worth advancing. That's like saying, here's half the answer to a riddle. Who cares about half an answer? It is simply more accurate to say there are two accounts, and they are in irresolvable conflict.
