"Singular they" or "the singular they"?[[edit source]]

Throughout this article, "Singular they" is used as the subject of sentences, e.g. "Singular they was a pronoun". I'm no grammatical expert, but this doesn't seem to match common usage to me. In my own experience it's always either "‘They’ was a pronoun", or "The singular they was a pronoun".
