Eye Patch Lady[[edit source]]

There seem to be a lot of valid sources that are indicating Frances Barber character appearing briefly in all episodes similair to Day of the Moon before her big debut in episode 7 as a story arc (similair to the way the cracks appeared last series). Could it be added to the myths section that the Eye Patch lady will make a brief appearance. -- Michael Downey 10:37, May 2, 2011 (UTC)

If you find a source, then yes, I would be happy to add it. Mini-mitch\talk 10:49, May 2, 2011 (UTC)

Thank you. I'll add the GallifreyBase one, since Doctor Who Spoilers is blacklisted, meaning we're not allowed to link to it. Mini-mitch\talk 11:03, May 2, 2011 (UTC)

Avery is the same Avery from The Smugglers?[[edit source]]

I read that this episode will be a prequel of sorts to The Smugglers. I haven't read or watched that story yet but i noticed on the wiki page for it, there is a character named Avery. Could he be the same Avery in this episode, or perhaps a younger or older Avery? Maybe even a relative? Rawrgoaway 04:13, May 4, 2011 (UTC)

  • Turns out that there was a real pirate by the name of Henry Avery [1] (sometimes spelled Every) who disappeared in 1696. Could be the man in this episode. Dascott 19:45, May 8, 2011 (UTC)
    • Reading the same link that Dascott refereced, it does mention Henry Avery capturing the Mughal treasure, which was also referenced by the Avery in this episode. That may or may not tie into the "Avery's Treasure" from The Smugglers. Spreee 16:40, May 9, 2011 (UTC)Spreee
  • I think it's safe to say that the Avery in this episode and the one mentioned in the Smugglers are the same. Will the character pages be merged? Because other than that, there really wasn't any other reference to the Smugglers. Rawrgoaway 02:52, May 9, 2011 (UTC)

No, the pages can't be merged. Any suggestion that they are the same is speculation despite the strong evidence.----Skittles the hog--Talk 16:46, May 9, 2011 (UTC)

  • The only evidence we have is: Henry Avery is based on the real life Henry Avery (sometimes Every), who's backgrounds match completely and they both disappeared. (Hugh Bonneville interview, DWM 434). The real life Henry Avery is only linked to the Avery mentioned in Smuggler's because of the treasure they hid. The real life Avery to Smuggler's Avery is vague, and cannot be seen as confirmed link to both characters.Mini-mitch\talk 15:10, May 10, 2011 (UTC)

It is at least possible the two are the same, considering the one in the Smugglers was probably alluding to Avery in the same way this character is alluding (or is) the original. The article should at least be open to it, considering that he may be, or may be related to, the Smugglers Avery rather than implying he is certainly not.82.35.18.139 14:34, May 10, 2011 (UTC)

  • I've been turning this over in my mind, and one thing that's proving difficult to reconcile are the dates. Black Spot is set in 1699, but if Smugglers is a sequel then there's not much wiggle room between the two, given that the latter is also set in the seventeenth century. So if we are talking about the same Avery in both cases, what's the gap between the two? Less than two years? Then again, since the only references to the century come from the Doctor, Ben and Polly, I suppose they might have been a few years short of the mark. Leda74 22:39, December 31, 2013 (UTC)

story notes[[edit source]]

The episode was moved up to the spring run because Steven Moffat thought the first part of the series contained "not enough outside". (Source: DWM 430) D0ct0r11 19:54, May 6, 2011 (UTC)

Missing crewman[[edit source]]

Did I blink or was there a crewman with the black spot in the powder room with the companions and the boy (rebarricaded the door after he got the spot and his mate left) who suddenly wasnt there when they returned? 83.104.138.141 02:39, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

  • I noticed this too. Perhaps a scene was cut? There have been deleted scenes before so who knows. Seems like too big of a thing to be a mistake. Rawrgoaway 03:29, May 8, 2011 (UTC)
  • Yeah; this seems to be a major hole in the plotline. I can't find any mention of a deleted scene that takes care of this problem yet, though. Maybe something will surface after a while.....129.65.231.107 00:38, May 15, 2011 (UTC)

Walking the Plank 'Never Happened'?[[edit source]]

This supposed 'production error' is not an error - instances were rare, but it was documented to have happened on at least four occasions in the real world - the 'Fourth Dimension' section of the episode guide on the BBC website even states "... Many believe this practice is a myth created by Hollywood, but historical literature records several verifiable instances of the punishment which can be traced back to at least the 17th century." and I can only find evidence to back this upBaziel 14:06, May 8, 2011 (UTC)

Someone has changed the article (badly) to once again state it as a myth. Angelus Lupus 20:43, May 12, 2011 (UTC)

Cultural references[[edit source]]

This article mentions Pirates of the Caribbean as a cultural reference but rather misses the more obvious Black Spot, Siren, Henry Every (and so on) references that perhaps ought to be noted?82.35.18.139 14:31, May 10, 2011 (UTC)

Avery as enemy?[[edit source]]

Should Avery really be considered as an enemy? He's no more an enemy than all the other characters who misjudge the Doctor upon arrival. 90.216.217.159 16:15, May 10, 2011 (UTC)

He started of as an enemy, because he tried to kill the Doctor, but later had a chnage of ideas. Mini-mitch\talk 16:22, May 10, 2011 (UTC)

So do a lot of characters. Adelaide and Canton both threatened to kill the Doctor, but neither of them are considered enemies. There are a lot of episodes, especially from before the psychic paper, where the Doctor is initially mistrusted by characters who become his allies for the rest of the episode. Avery wasn't really an enemy for more than 5 minutes.Icecreamdif 01:51, May 11, 2011 (UTC)

The Canton enemy bit? That was pretension. He was pretending to be enemy. 194.81.55.193 13:43, May 12, 2011 (UTC)

I think you mean 'pretence'. Pretention is something else entirely.Angelus Lupus 21:38, May 12, 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, what the hell. 194.81.55.193 07:31, May 14, 2011 (UTC)

Plot continuum[[edit source]]

Why does it say To be continued at the end of The Curse of the Black Spot's plot? Somebody continue the plot, please. I myself don't know what to write. 194.81.55.193 13:43, May 12, 2011 (UTC)

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WON'T SOMEBODY GIVE THE CURSE OF THE BLACK SPOT A FULL, CONTINUED PLOT?! NOT ME, I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TO WRITE, THAT'S FOR SURE!!! 90.210.131.149 07:27, May 14, 2011 (UTC)

For the ensured protection of sanity won't someone continue the godforsaken plot??? 194.81.55.193 and I are going out of hand at this, this is ridiculous! 90.210.131.149 11:11, May 15, 2011 (UTC)

Answer this question as soon as possible, please[[edit source]]

Write the answer underneath, please: Which editor wrote the plot for the curse of the black spot, because they never finished it. Which editor was it? Which one? Oh, please tell me, somebody! Doug87 14:45, May 15, 2011 (UTC)

Son's Eyes"[[edit source]]

There's a point in errors that says:

"When the captain's son is lying in the sick bay, his eyes are seen moving although he is supposed to be in stasis."

Does that really need to be there? He could just be dreaming. Our eyes can move while we sleep. It happens... Kranitoko (talk) 18:47, July 31, 2014 (UTC)

Should "Eye Patch Lady" be an enemy?[[edit source]]

Shouldn't Kovarian be an enemy? She IS the ONLY enemy in this episode. Scheepybird 18:19, December 1, 2014 (UTC)

She's not the main enemy, which is what the infobox asks for. Not every story has to have an enemy. Not every infobox field needs to be filled out. Shambala108 18:38, December 1, 2014 (UTC)
