Talk:Thomas Daley

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

Updating with his full name[[edit source]]

Now admittedly, I haven't read/listened to any of the Iris Wildthyme media, but based on what I've read on this wiki, he's a pretty major player. Like, in relation to Doctor Who, companion level. Not putting his full name in the title would be like putting Rory(The Eleventh Hour) or Yaz(The Woman Who Fell to Earth). Never Forget The Day The 456 Arrived 22:47, May 2, 2020 (UTC)

Given that the overwhelming majority of his stories just call him "Tom", I think it's confusing to have the page be called Thomas. It leads to a bunch of pages mentioning "Thomas Daley" when describing stories which use neither of those names for the character, sorta creating a false sense that there's this recurring Iris character named "Thomas Daley" when really he's normally just "Tom". Now, I haven't read the latest Iris anthology, so I don't know the context of his full name reveal, but I'd recommend considering renaming this page to "Tom Daley". CoT ? 19:09, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
Interesting thought, but it's also worth keeping in mind the precedents of Charlotte Pollard and Yasmin Khan. Yaz is usually called, well, "Yaz", and I'm sure there are stories which don't ever mention "Yasmin" or "Khan" — but when she gives her full name it's always "Yasmin Khan", never "Yaz Khan".
So by analogy, we need to check whether the form "Tom Daley" is attested in valid sources. If it is, then by all means, we can rename his page to that, by the same token as Amy Pond. Otherwise, though, precedent suggests otherwise.
Note, however, that paragraphs sourced to a given story should strive to use the name used by that story. For example, our page is at Dalek Prime, but we'd say that "the Golden Emperor fought Zeg in a duel (COMIC: Duel of the Daleks)", with a pipeswitch. Likewise, Caitlin Blackwood played "Amelia Pond", not Amy Pond. So all those confusing paragraphs should be changed to [[Thomas Daley|Tom]] whatever else happens. ...that's what I've been doing, but certain people had an issue with that when I created Tom's home. See the talk page. 19:32, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
Now look, those are very different things. The argument can be made that page names should be consistent across the board, without this invalidating the fact that when writing about Tom's adventures on any given page, you should call him "Tom". Scrooge MacDuck 19:36, 2 December 2020 (UTC)
