Talk:Tibetan Yeti

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

I added a photo I found that is apparently of a real Yeti. I see that in the Behind the Scenes section, it says no photos exist. I was wondering who actually stated this, because this a genuine Yeti photo. I'm A Hydroponic Tomato! Bigredrabbit 08:20, December 1, 2009 (UTC)

Thing is, though, the AS script does not positively identify this as a "real" Yeti. Travers believes it is, but that hardly makes it so. And the Doctor, when directly asked whether Travers will catch a real Yeti, says, "I don't know." Web of Fear is silent on the issue of "real" Yetis, and rather directly indicates he never did catch one. In fact, it's all but explicit that the one he brought back to London was in fact the "real" one he chased after in part six of AS. So, as far as the TV series is concerned, there's no definitive "real" Yeti. You'd get a different impression from the novelisations, however.
I'm interested to know why you believe this photo is a "genuine" Yeti photo, though. I know it's the one the official site has established it as the real Yeti, but the truth is, it could just as easily have come from episode 4, when a lone Yeti also climbs up the mountainside. Maybe it's because of the angle — I mean, it's really just a shot up the backside — but it doesn't look particularly different from a robotic Yeti. That's the problem with telesnaps. We're told they're in the right order, but we don't actually know that they are, because, especially on a location shoot, things are filmed out of sequence. All the location work for the episode was filmed over just six days, so there's no guarantee that what we're looking at is really from episode six. Or, frankly, it could be an outtake, as there was plenty of opportunity to catch a shot of a Yeti slipping on the mountainside during that wet shoot. Surely you'll agree this shot could just as easily be of a Yeti successfully climbing upwards, as it could be of a Yeti unsuccessfully falling down. I personally think this picture should be removed from this article. Instead, a shot the DWM comic strip should take pole position, as that's the only story in all of DW fiction which contains confirmed images of "real" Yeti. CzechOut | 19:28, January 21, 2010 (UTC)
