Tangiwai was a small settlement in New Zealand.
On 24 December 1953, a train bound for Auckland was derailed near Tangiwai, after a lahar destroyed a bridge in its path. The next day, the Sixth Doctor saved Matiu from the flow of water, and helped to bring him to Tangiwai. (PROSE: Water's Edge)
