Work together to improve infobox images — and leave behind good revision notes.

People love putting images in infoboxes around here. There are any number of editors whose main contributions surround infobox images. So there are moments when emotions can run high if changes are made without apparent good cause. At the same time, if you're one of our "infobox editors", you shouldn't necessarily take it personally if your image gets replaced. See, even though edit wars are to be avoided, it's natural that over time a number of different pictures might cycle into the infobox slot.

The key is communication and thought.

When someone replaces your infobox image, consider why they've done that before reverting. Ask yourself if their image better exemplifies the guidelines set forth in our well illustrated guide to images.

When you replace someone else's infobox image, please leave a revision note specifically explaining why your image improves upon the current one.

Please don't just say:
  • This is better.
  • The last image sucked.
Instead do say:
  • This is tighter on the subject's face (or, conversely, this shows more of the subject's face than before)
  • This pic is solely of the subject, while the previous had other people in frame
  • This is widescreen, while the previous was closer to a square

And note that there are some pages, such as The Doctor and The Master, where considerable, years-long debates have occurred to get them to their current state. Changes to such pages' infoboxes may be immediately reverted to uphold the existing community consensus. It's also long been a general rule that infobox images for all the Doctors, the Master, the companions and long-standing television stories require community discussion (and admin closure) on the article talk pages before changing these images.
