Template:Map/doc

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

{{map}} is a simple way to make a map appear on a page. Explanatory text is also produced, which warns the reader not to assume that the location in the DWU is the same as the location in real life.

By typing {{map}} on the page Cardiff, you'd get this:

Location information

Loading map...

Though it's possible that a real world location doesn't exist in the same geographic space in the Doctor Who universe, such cases are few and far between. Thus, the map to the right is probably a good indicator of the DWU location of Map/doc.

Notes

Well, you'd almost get that. Actually, it would put the PAGENAME of the current page in several different locations, and that replacement function can't be shown smoothly here on this page.

There are some user-definable terms:

{{map|place name|nn|type of map}}

where

  1. the place name defaults to the PAGENAME
  2. nn is equal to the level of magnification. Default is 6 which very neatly places most cities in the middle of the frame. Smaller towns may need to have a number as high as 12. Individual buildings may require something more like 20.
  3. the type of map is by default terrain. In many cases, this shouldn't be touched. (That's why it's the default!) But if you're trying to identify a building or a campus or some other similarly tight area, you might want to change to hybrid so that you can display a specific building and still have a label. Other possible values that would be acceptable on this wiki in certain circumstances include roadmap, satellite, physical and, very rarely, earth.

The section header here of "real world location" is carefully designed to be modular with other headers on the page. If there is a pre-existing "behind the scenes" section, this automatically-generated header will "fit under" that BTS section header. (For the technically minded, this header is an h3, while the BTS headers are set to h2.) However, it already contains the words "real world" so that readers know it's a BTS note. So, regardless of whether there's a pre-existing BTS section, this template creates a map section that works.

If you only wanted to change one of the variables — say, the third one — then you'd type the number associated with that item, and set it equal to your chosen value.

Hence {{map|3=hybrid}} on the page Cardiff would produce this:
