Template talk:Discontinuity
For some reason, all the pages using this template have also created links to [[story title (TV story)]], except the red links aren't appearing on the pages themselves, but are showing up in the Wanted Pages, meaning that nearly 800 extra links have been added to that list. I've tried to fix the problem myself without success, so I'm hoping that someone else can tackle the problem. Doug86 09:19, July 30, 2010 (UTC)
- You won't be able to solve it. It's a bug in the MediaWiki software with the #ifexist call that the developers have declared that they won't fix. We ran into this issue on Memory Alpha well over a year ago, and ended up simply renaming all of our episode articles to contain the '(episode)' postfix. - I don't recall that (though it may have been during a heavy amount of stuff being left on my talk page), though I often only keep half an eye on the templates and have confidence that others who were messing with them knew what was happening.
- Would de-linking all the examples that use something with 'TV story' in them fix the problem?
- I guess the flipside of this question is; is the functionality of the templates worth changing every single story on this wiki, as the other DW (and its related templates) employ a similar #if structure, to make these templates work? - The examples aren't the issue -- the problem is on the pages where this is used. If the episode name with "TV story" doesn't exist, then it shows up as a "wanted page". There are two ways to correct this:
- Create redirects from "TV story" to the non-"TV story" version for every episode.
- Move every episode to have "TV story" in the title, and leave redirects in place.
- Both of these will require no changes to other stuff around the wiki (which is a good thing(tm)), and will "solve" the "wanted pages" issue. Memory Alpha went with the second method, and every reference to episodes (etc) is done via templates anyhow. That may not work quite so well on the TARDIS File. -- sulfur 15:08, July 30, 2010 (UTC)
- Couldn't we just make this template a little less um..."clever" and just force the use of the whole article title when linking through rather than all this messy mucking around with the #if clause out of curiosity?
- Creating redirects from the TV story to the non-TV story titled one, I think is preferable as it'll affect the least amount of change to the wiki.
- The obsessive part of me hates creating re-directs that don't do anything, I think both Doug86 and I often trawl through the redirects getting rid of the superfluous redirects that exist, but I think this path is the lesser of the two concerns. --Tangerineduel 17:14, July 30, 2010 (UTC)
- Just a question: who the heck cares if there are redlinks in "Wanted pages"? Neither of the skins currently available make it easy at all for the average editor to find that page, anyway. It seems to me this was the reason that the devs didn't want to fix the error: hardly anyone sees it. Heck, you can't even find Special:SpecialPages from the (intended) skin any more. And there would've been only one "request" for it, meaning it would've been way down on the list, out of almost everyong's view. In other words, the people that actually find "Wanted pags" anymore are probably just the people who have responded to this thread, and maybe one or two more. And actually, by looking through that list, I can't find an example above place 1000, and the system won't let me advance to anything after 1000. So you can't even find these redlinks in "Wanted pages", anyway. And no one seems to have created The Sensorites (TV story) or The Happiness Patrol (TV story), so I'd say the issue has resolved itself.
Spelling[[edit source]]
Might I suggest an additional line for the template urging people to make sure their spelling and capitalization is correct? I just came back from cleaning up a bunch of the discontinuity pages that have posts on them that look like they were written by 3 year olds. 68.146.64.9 06:02, January 31, 2011 (UTC)
- In reply to this two year old message: no. The Theory:Discontinuity index is a place for discussion. These aren't actual "articles" — just theories swapped between friends. We don't police any other discussion area on the wiki for spelling (per T:SPELL) so we're not going to start with this one. See also Theory:Discontinuity pages: spelling and grammar.

Just a quick question: why is this forum namespace only containing discontinuity for television stories? Shouldn't it be for all sources, such as prose? Also, with {{discontinuity}}, it mentions uses a few cases of T:NPOV-unfriendly language, so that should be changed as well.
I think discontinuity discussions for other non-televised sources could be quite interesting.
