Is this really necessary? Isn't this what categories are for? --Tangerineduel 12:32, January 7, 2010 (UTC)
Totally agree, just doesn't fit in and of course isn't relevant. Michael Downey 12:34, January 7, 2010 (UTC)
- Well, as the author, of course I disagree with deletion. The categories for hospitals have become so fragmented (there's category:British hospitals and Category:English hospitals, for instance) that there is no longer any one category which encompasses all these hospitals. This navigation box thus unifies a user's search for various named hospitals, Earthbound or not. As for its relevancy, hospitals are a dominant setting in the Whoniverse. Three Doctors regenerated or had post-regenerative recovery in a hospital (3,4,and 8). Further, he's spent time as a non-regenerative patient on several occasions (just on televised evidence alone: 2, 4, 10). Numerous companions have spent important narrative time in hospitals (Polly, Jamie, Sarah, Izzie, Destrii, Hex, Martha, and Grace, just for a start). Dozens of stories have either been principally set in hospitals (The Empty Child), or at least have significant narrative moments in hospitals (The Hand of Fear, Blink). And Torchwood has a hospital in nearly every story. A typical narrative pattern for Torchwood goes like this:
- The gang discover something weird is going on because of unusual admission patterns at a local hospital
- They go to a hospital to investigate.
- Owen/Martha/Gwen examines one of the patients, says "That's weird", then dashes back to the Hub to do some technobabble/further research which connects their patient to an alien threat.
- The gang then set off for the main body of the episode.
- I can appreciate that you might not feel, yet, that this a significant thing, but please wait until you read my forthcoming article on hospitals. Given the notes I've so far collected, I think you'll be surprised just how massively central hospitals are to the Whoniverse. So far, I've collected at least 50 individual instances of hospitals' narrative significance. Hospitals are more ubiquitous in Whoniverse stories than the Daleks, for whom we quite happily have a navigation box.
- Still skeptical? Although I haven't yet finished doing al the links, just check out the number of pages that currently link to hospital: Special:WhatLinksHere/Hospital CzechOut ☎ | ✍ 17:55, January 7, 2010 (UTC)
- I'm still skeptical, but willing to wait.
- It's just that the way you describe hospitals could be applied to dozens of other things, Category:Foods and beverages leaps to mind a lot the foods (beverages in particular) pop up in many stories, yet no template for them (and no need for one...just in case someone's waiting in the wings to create a tea and coffee template...)
- Also I'm not sure if a template is the way to go with it, as there's a lot of hospitals, there may be too much information to cram into a template.
- Perhaps (just throwing the idea out here) it might be something to look into to have a general template that can go at the bottom of articles like the hospital articles that points towards the main hospital article (or/and a list of appearances article), rather than trying to list them all within the template? --Tangerineduel 13:38, January 10, 2010 (UTC)
- I'm still slightly skeptical about how well this template will grow with the amount of hospitals that haven't (yet) been mentioned in articles. But for it's looking alright. I've removed the prop delete. --Tangerineduel 12:24, January 13, 2010 (UTC)
Coverage[[edit source]]
Does this navbox really need to be limited to named hospitals? That seems arbitrary. Cookieboy 2005 ☎ 00:23, 22 April 2024 (UTC)
