The Ballad of the Grey Mare was a poem about the Mari Lwyd.
Daniel Price read the poem at school and was frightened by it, hiding his copy in the back of a cupboard at home because of the illustrations. Jim read it to Ambrose, whom he called a philistine for not listening. (AUDIO: The Grey Mare)

The poem is presumably based on the real-world Ballad of the Mari Lwyd by Vernon Watkins, published in 1941.
