The Director was a creation of Separation Day Incorporated The Third Doctor believed it was a research organism used by the company to investigate emotional strife, then became horrified by what it had done. When the Doctor appeared to convince Emily Rutherford and Tom Charrington to stay together to prevent the destruction of the universe, the Director tried to stop him, but then exploded.
