The Sacrificial Pawn was a short story originally published in The Casebook of Newbury & Hobbes, it was also collected in Obverse Books' Team Up anthology.

London October 1902, Sir Maurice Newbury and his friend Charles Bainbridge are held prisoner by the Cabal of the Horned Beast. The Cabal wish to retrieve a book stolen from them by Newbury on behalf of Veronica Hobbes' sister Amelia. Tensions are strained between Newbury and Bainbridge when it transpires that Newbury had led to Bainbridge's capture after falsely telling the Cabal that he possessed their ritual book.
However it is soon revealed that Bainbridge was a sacrificial pawn - and the pair are rescued by Veronica, who was able to follow the trail after Bainbridge's abduction.
