Tom was friends with Sherlock Holmes in his youth and worked with him as Holmes attempted to divine what was causing things to become fictional, to change reality so that Ruritania and Martians had never existed. Holmes ultimately decided to become fictional, as did Tom in his later years, after passing on his story to members of a gentlemen's club he founded. (PROSE: The Book of the Enemy)
