Tom Wintringham

Tom Wintringham was a British soldier and supporter of the Home Guard during World War II.

With the threat of invasion by Nazi Germany looming over Britain in 1940, Wintringham believed that the whole population, men and women, should be armed, not only to fend of an invasion but also to launch a socialist revolution in the event of the British government, bankers and landowners seeking to make peace with Hitler. He became known as the inventor of what was termed "the people's war".

Wintringham trained the South Mendip Auxiliary Unit in guerrilla warfare. Max Wheeler, a member of the unit, thought he was an "inspirational man". (PROSE: Losing the Audience)
