One of the most contentious rules on the Wiki, that causes a lot of frustration about how exactly it should be applied, are this Wiki's image policies. This ranges from the composistion framing that is enforced to the postively archaic restrictions on filesize. The scope of this thread, however, I feel is so broad trying to determine one specific course of action is hard. Hence, I propose this thread to cover a complete overhaul to all of our image policies, in light of community consensus and even the evolution of the software and hardware these very images are hosted on. The policies to overhaul will be T:GTI, T:IUP, and T:ICC.
But that leaves me with a question: where do I begin? Well, I will break down each policy, address the faults and propose an update I am sure we can all agree on. As Tardis:Guide to images states, "We want the best possible images.", and the policy currently do not fulfil that remit.
Tardis:Guide to images[[edit] | [edit source]]
Right off the bat, we have Tardis:Guide to images.
- The first rule I propose to change is the restriction on no more than one image per section, with smaller sections receiving no images. The reason for this, given by T:GTI, are the loading times of larger pages. But now that we're in 2023, I feel this rationale is long since outdated, as devices and software have massively improved since these rules were written. To remedy this, I'm not proposing anything wild, but I feel allowing more than one image per section can be allowed if the section in question exceeds a certain size threshold. I'm not sure what this threshold would be, I am not a technical person, but I am sure @Bongo50 — one of our most technical admins — can answer this question. From my point of view, it makes no sense if two smaller sections can both contain images but a single section of the same length cannot.
