New Logo and DWA

I've unlocked my talk page. I think it was when my profile was being majorly vandalised I locked it, and the talk page was locked alongside it. So that's it open now. Thanks for the logo. I will indeed be using it. Thanks.

And I'm glad you think the idea to nuke the questions is fantastic. Would you like to become one of the admins? Because even if you're never there, if there's a major problem, it'll always he handy for you to have admin powers there.

We do actually have a policies page, although BC didn't seem to follow these either. He has since had all his powers removed and has been blocked. Now that I've reviewed the policies with just some minor changes in wordings, I'm deleting the pages.

The last major update Wikia distributed really messed up the Left 4 Dead wiki, so I was wondering if you'd be willing to teach me a thing or two about some of the coding used here. CC-BY-SA & the New Editor

I did look briefly into the CC BY SA 2.0, at least one other wiki has it in use. But if you think this isn't enough then I'll send off a report.

I missed the preview button, then I realised it's white, I'd imagine that this is part of the problematic change over.

Do Wikia think? Ever? Or do they just keep adding bad features?

I'm going to tackle the less complicated issue, that I already tackled last message and that's of CC 2.0. Don't worry about it, the feature that exists now where you can upload pics or grab them from Flikr (which is incidentally where I got all the images that have the CC 2.0 license on them from) attaches the CC 2.0 licence to it. And while we know Wikia makes some idiotic decisions I don't think they'd make this sort of mistake.

Now onto the bigger more complicated question that I want to avoid.

The switch to Oasis didn't make me want to leave, countless other things didn't make me want to leave.

This does, it's made the editor so unsuable I'm seriously thinking of just going and I dunno, editing Wikipedia where they don't make these stupid design decisions.

I really feel for you, considering I don't know how many days (weeks/months?) that you've spent trying to make this site look as good as it did.

I think we need two forum topics, one Tech notes/Important messages that is just an announcement for:

• Stuff that doesn't work.
• Stuff that partially works.
• Stuff that hasn't changed.
• Workarounds.
• Other stuff.

Then another forum topic for reports with the same basic headings; Not working, Partially working, workarounds.

We should also have a link to the Special:Contact page so people can go straight to them and to Sarah Manley's blog page as well.

Both should be just reports not discussions, maybe a third for I dunno people to discuss it?

I sometimes think frustration is good, in that I hope it will force editors to put that frustration into words and send it to Wikia, or alternatively it will drive people away and therefore show Wikia there's been a drop in traffic because of this new change. Or is this too harsh an approach?

Monobook is an option (weren't wikia going to turn it off at some point?), but I don't think it's a valid one for us to send anyone to. It should be the very last resort.

Firstly I think you need to absolve yourself of all responsibility :). Then make up a big sign pointing towards Wikia central, and then kick back with a cold/hot beverage. Hopefully this will make the headache go away.

I don't think we need to get too involved with the user fallout. As I've said two forums or three, the third would be a venting one I'd say. Wikia central for more information and their forums.

I think if we have things like that in place where people can see what isn't and what is working and that we didn't just turn it on for shits and giggles and that it's another of Wikia's "quirks" of trying to make the sites under its bosom function better for "new editors" (its reason for most changes) while fraking around with the user experience of everyone else. Re: Chat

To answer your question, what I meant by "the code almost worked" was that while it did align the the TOC, it still pushed the rest of the content beneath it. However, I've found that making an extra box underneath the infobox as part of the template prevents that problem. So thanks for helping me!

Forum fault

Categories

In regards to the category comment you left on my page mentioning bots - the main thing I was doing was removing duplicate categories. For example, pages that were in "Category: Stories set in London" and "Category: Stories set in England". If there's a way a bot can go and do this for multiple categories - great. One thing to watch out for, is what Mini-Mitch said on my talk page about pages occasionally needing to be in both a category and its sub-category (eg. The End of Time, where parts are set in London and parts elsewhere in England). If you're able to program a bot that meets these requirements then great. Let me know if you're able so I know I can stop making these sorts of edits.

UNIT dating controversy

Now that I've considered things, I suppose that the reference to the "UNIT era" doesn't really add anything to the UNIT dating controversy page, though I have one question: where does it say the events of TV: The Invasion is set in 1979? 'Greeks Bearing Gifts' vandalism

My apologies for getting in touch over such a annoying issue, but I've just fixed (or attempted to fix) the 'Greeks Bearing Gifts' page after the article suffered some major vandalism, with the entire article being changed to a load of racist and inappropriate remarks. Just thought I'd run this past you as clicking support makes you jump through a few extra hoops than the last time I did it, and you've been around the 'blocking people' forums lately re BC.

"WhoDoctor" Doctor Who Wiki. User:CharmeRuler, the only user who's editing this "wiki" left a request on my talk page (and Clone gunner comanda jedi and your bot's talk pages) asking how to create templates (I rolled back the edit to the bot's talk page so the redirect continues to function).

Do we just contact wikia staff to request a removal/deleting of the wiki? The wiki appears to have been created a few days ago and the reading listed for the move to "Doctor Who Wiki" is "SEO". Please tell me how to get a bot

Categories related to Torchwood (team)

A while back, I removed examples pertaining to the Miracle Day Torchwood allies, enemies and personnel from the categories Torchwood Three allies, Torchwood Three enemies and Torchwood Three personnel. I did state my reason quite clearly: "Whatever we call it, that Torchwood certainly isn't Torchwood Cardiff.", which Redranger241 has since added them all back, with no apparent reason given. Am I seriously missing something? I understand whether it's part of the Institute has been up for debate, but it's not Torchwood Three at all. Should I talk with the aforementioned editor? I'd probably have asked for the admins' advice earlier, but I was just completely baffled by these edits. -- Tybort (talk page) 15:40, September 19, 2011 (UTC)

Nintendo

Seem to be having a little trouble with CharmeRuler on the Nintendo page, who is confusing "Cultural references from the real world" pages with pages that have a Real World POV, apparently because the phrase "Real world" is in both. Site behaving weirdly - Firefox

I'm seeing just the text for all the templates in Firefox. I've done the usual; cleared the cache etc. It's made no difference. In Opera and Safari none of the images for the real world templates show through and none of the glowyness (though I seem to recall that being an issue). But both are functioning a lot better than Firefox is at the moment.

I also couldn't leave a message for you under Firefox (it just went to "publishing" and then went to preview instead.

Firefox is acting up again. The page banners, such as the spoiler and real world ones appear only as text, and the "protected" banner appears on the page rather than on the outside. I've cleared my cache, but it does not seem to help the problem. MM/Want to talk? 13:07, October 1, 2011 (UTC)

Adding the same category multiple times

Adding "Stories released in 1973" twice was a complete accident. Bare in mind that is past one o'clock in the morning for me. I have to admit that I was sort of on autopilot as regards adding categories to pages and must have simply forgotten to go to the next page after posting "Stories released in 1973". I can assure you that it was nothing more than an honest mistake. I admit that I may have added the same category more than once to other pages today due to tiredness and/or carelessness but it was certainly not a conscious choice. If so, I apologise but I'm not nor have I ever been a cheater. It's just not in me, frankly.

To answer your question, it was seemingly reprinted as a Fourth Doctor story in issues 1390 to 1396 of TV Comic. Siggie Help?

I customized my time stamp on a different wiki, and I was wondering about how you customized your time stamp to such an extent (borders, colours, etc.) without putting it on your /sig page. I couldn't fit all of my customization on my custom signature box on my preferences, so I put it on my /sig page, but now I realize that it'll change every time the time changes, instead of staying at the time when I signed my message. Firefox issues

It seems Firefox is perennially broken. Is it Mozilla's often updates, Wikia? Or is it just me? The issues are what's been seen before, templates not working, show/hide issues, basically all and everything. I've done all the clearing and refreshing. Dalekese

I noticed you deleted the page about the Dalekese language because "there is no narrative source for this information. information which exists SOLELY in a reference work can't have its own page." In my opinion, that shouldn't be a reason why it shouldn't have its own page because it's a part of Dalek culture as we do have other articles based on information found in the book, but is there anyway we could still add this information somewhere to the wiki as it's from an official source? --Victory93 ^{talk to me} 09:06, October 9, 2011 (UTC)

• I see. But The Dalek Pocketbook and Space Travellers Guide is an official reference book by Terry Nation who of course owns all rights to the Dalek universe. So even though most of the information in there might conflict with post-Genesis of the Daleks history, couldn't the subject still be considered for an article?

Also on a further note, the article Silcronian which has been kept which includes information that appears to be only in the book, would this come under a different subject or the same, additionally the book goes into in-depth including diagrams of Dalek technology which only appears in this book. Would they also warrant articles? Plus further saying on the topic of Polly, could we just simply state somewhere how this is an error and ignore it much like how Wirrn is mispelled Wirrrn or how in Doctor Who: 100 Scariest Monsters Kaldor is mispelled Caldor? Proposition

I see what you mean by when it's something said in a narrative and not in a reference book. But that doesn't mean we can't include this sort of information. It's pretty obvious that Polly Lopez, Caldor and Wirrrn are errors but it doesn't mean that with one error that the whole book doesn't count.

Lets look at the Star Wars wiki for example. There are of course heaps of things in the Star Wars universe which havn't been mentioned in any narrative material however are discussed in official reference material which on the wiki, articles have been created about it. In addition in the past there has been numerous material which has made an error to already placed continuity, saying something else, or has a spelling error about someone or something's name, but that simple mistake doesn't mean that the entire book doesn't count. In regards to an article on the Star wars wiki, any mistake that has been made in reference material, a note is included at the bottom of the article stating which book or source material has made this certain mistake to let fans know.

In recent Doctor Who reference material, there has been some in-universe information (not in a narrative form) that has given more explanation about the Doctor and the TARDIS which doesn't conflict with existing canon. In the Visual Dictionary, it explains about the dimension which the TARDIS console room exists. The time sceptre which is a structure that floats within that dimension is where the console room sits and other rooms of the TARDIS stem out from that spire.

Here is a proposition I would like to make which I hope both of us can agree on and we could use for the TARDIS wiki. Any information which is found in a narrative (episodes, novels, audios, comcis etc.) is straight away used and even if it conflicts with already established information, we can simply explain how the two might coincide. For example the novel Bullet Time conflicts with how Sarah Jane is still alive but we've included both instances and included an explanation on how they exist. With reference material which includes in-universe information that might not appear in narrative material, if it doesn't conflict with anything, then it counts and we can include it in an article or an article for itself. However if it says something else which conflicts with already existing canon, then obviously that is an error and we simply don't include that small bit of information, however we make a small note somewhere on the article of the material and the subject explaining how that particular information is incorrect. For example on the article Kaldor, I was to add in the behind the scenes section the following statement "In the reference book Doctor Who: 100 Scariest Monsters, Kaldor is mispelled Caldor" and with Wirrn "In numerous material, Wirrn has been sometimes mispelled Wirrrn" which we can do soemthing similar with Polly in her article. • Well we wouldn't be including behind-the-scenes material as that is real world material. Just IN-UNIVERSE material which expands on those subjects and characters in the DWU. For instance it is mentioned in the show that the TARDIS console room exists in another dimension but they don't appear to expand on that any further. If you look in Doctor Who: The Visual Dictionary on page 16 on the inside-flap, you'll see that it goes in-depth detailing about this dimension and how the console room is part of this structure called the time sceptre. This is all I mean, reference material which is about the DWU and looks at it from an in-universe perspective, no behind-the-scenes, no interviews, nothing real-world. This isn't about a deletion rationale, this is about in-universe material featured in a reference source. A reference work can be a source of information about an in-universe subject and can expand about it which hasn't been revealed in a narrative. It's possible dividing single works into parts that are valid sources and parts that aren't. For example, the content of a book might be in-universe however an author's note or a behind the scenes section would be out of universe. If you look at the The Gallifrey Chronicles (illustrated guide), it features a detailed history about Gallifrey which is IN-UNIVERSE whilst the publisher's summary on the back of the book is OUT-OF-UNIVERSE. Now do you see what I'm trying to explain to you? The quality of how something is explained, whether good or bad shouldn't be considered a factor, only whether it's explained from an in-universe perspective is what matters. We don't need to create a list on material which we consider good much like how we don't need a list on how each episode is considered good or bad from a fan's point of view.

I mean would it count if the reference was read by Captain Jack, then would it be considered in-universe? It would be Out of universe if it were read by John Barrowmen.

There is no narrative here but it explains a part of the universe from an in-universe perspective which you should know there is no real person named Wolverine, much like how we know there is no such planet called Gallifrey in the real world.

Which brings me back to the reason I sent you a text in the first place: a way to tell Daleks apart by colour without forcing them to "Taste the rainbow." Well, who says they have to be brightly coloured? I mean, in the Dalek civil war, the "Imperial" Daleks were white, whereas the renegades were dark grey. So, eventually, aan inGENious idea began to form in my amazing brain, and I finally came up with a new Dalek chain of command, listed below:

Drone = Bronze (obviously)

"Special Weapons" = Dark Grey

Strategist/ Technician = Silver- grey

Emperor = Black and Gold (kind of like that old 1965 movie "Dr. Who and the Daleks")

Actually, when designing the Dalek Emperor, I took an element from every bit of Who media, canonical and otherwise. It's sort of like the Dalek leader from "DWATD", Dalek Sec (no, NOT Mr. Squishy-tentacles, the other one), and even that horrible shiny gumball machine from the TV21 comics. You see, this is a parallel universe version of the Dalek Empire (hey, they did it with the Cybermen, so why not Daleks?), so I have a whole empty field to work with.

User warnings and other things

Brilliant work!

The little bits of sticky tape on the notices is a nice touch, especially how it goes over the left hand side.

You're making me feel a bit guilty, I've just been editing away on my own, not really doing any big "adminy" sorts of things while you're toiling away behind the scenes!

Maybe I'll go and write more Guides to in-universe articles, or the finish writing the Historical stories/Pseudo historical stories articles or something like that...instead of my trip through the NAs, mostly re-working stuff I wrote I dunno how long ago.

On a totally unrelated issue, one that was I think briefly brought up in a chat session (before it stopped working), we were talking about having a different namespace for non-canon universes (like Doctor Who Unbound etc).

I had a few random thoughts about it, so just thought I'd throw them out to you while I'm penning this reply. I recall we were trying to think of something short for the namespace, so;

XU would be for Crossed-Universes, with an NC-like note saying . "You've crossed into another universe. You can believe this is part of the Doctor Who multiverse. But we don't."

Expanded Wiki Navigation

For thirty seconds, I activated the feature "Expanded Wiki Navigation". What this does is replace the drop down menus to horizontal menus and adds a new menu called "On the Wiki" that that highlights important features of your content and community.

I disabled it encase anyone though that was anew layout or new feature and started to complain or want stuff added, but it looks like a good think we could trail out for a short period of time. I not tried to edit the "On the Wiki" menu, but I think if we can edit it, we could add links to the most recent Panopation discussion(s) - one mainly regarding policy change - alongside a 'featured page' - which could be the runner up in the featured page section or just a random page associated with a recent episode.

There is a slight hiccup (as there always is) and that is that the "Wiki activity" and "random page" buttons are replaced by one that says "contribute" - which is not formatted like out other buttons. Adding to this, the clock above the wiki activity button overlaps part of the menu - which you can see if you activate the feature.

Hey, I've read through, it all looks good, I only changed a few minor things. The most noticeable I'd say is changing "Pictures" to "Images". I know they're both fairly broad terms, but as we've got an Image use policy I think it's the correct way to go to talk about the images in use on the wiki.

I added a link to the Tardis:Copyright tags and left the link to MediaWiki:Licenses, but I'm not sure how helpful this link is. It's useful in showing the reader what's in the menu, but isn't useful in educating them on what each of those do. I wasn't sure if it was intentioned like that, just to show the reader this is what the menu looks like flattened out.

Categories and Disambiguation

Is there any category for "countries on Earth"? I saw China, Kenya, France, and so forth on but I couldn't find any category for them. The only thing I found realated to categorizing the countries was "Asian Nations". It would be good to see all of the pages nice and neat in a category.

As for what happened to my page, danged if I know. I looked at it one da and it was like that. I figured it was old, irrelevant information, so I just deleted all the old, junked stuff, whereupon one of the other administrators told me that my removing all of the c**p was vandalism and made me put it back. Disambiguation pages mixed up

Joe and Joseph are both and listed in "Joseph" while there is already another separate disambiguation page for Joe. Fortunately there is still no DAP for Josephine. Here's what I think about what should be done:

• List all of Joe, Joseph, and Josephine in "Joe"
• For Josephine and Joseph, make a redirect to "Joe" page, just like I did for "Alex". (i.e. "Joseph" disambiguation page will be gone.)

In addition, when you type "Jimmy" in the search bar, you'll get redirected to "James", which doesn't have any person named Jimmy, while there are more than dozen Jimmys in this wikia. Do you think we might need separate "Jimmy" disambiguation page, or should I add the names in that very page? I think Jamie, James, Jimmy should have separate pages, since putting all of them in "James" (or having Jimmy and James in one page while Jamie has it own) would make the page ugly and confusing.

Adam Smith

While I was adding names to "Adam", I found a very confusing thing. There are three pages related to "Adam".

• Adam Smith(disambiguation) This page has literally "disambiguation" in the title.
• Adam - An ordinary disambiguation page of the name.
• Adam Smith - a page for a character named "Adam Smith" from TV: Adam

I think there should be a cleanup or moving of the names, but I don't know what exactly should be done. Do you think all Adams should go to Adam dab and Adam Smith(disambiguation) deleted? On the other hand, it would be awkward to see a page named "Adam Smith (Adam)".

Happy holidays!

As this fiftieth anniversary year comes to a close, we here at Tardis just want to thank you for being a part of our community — even if you haven't edited here in a while. If you have edited with us this year, then thanks for all your hard work.

This year has seen an impressive amount of growth. We've added about 11,000 pages this year, which is frankly incredible for a wiki this big. November was predictably one of the busiest months we've ever had: over 500 unique editors pitched in. It was the highest number of editors in wiki history for a year in which only one programme in the DWU was active. And our viewing stats have been through the roof. We've averaged well over 2 million page views each week for the last two months, with some weeks seeing over 4 million views!

We've received an unprecedented level of support from Wikia Staff, resulting in all sorts of new goodies and productive new relationships. And we've recently decided to lift almost every block we've ever made so as to allow most everyone a second chance to be part of our community.

2014 promises to build on this year's foundations, especially since we've got a full, unbroken series coming up — something that hasn't happened since 2011. We hope you'll stick with us — or return to the Tardis — so that you can be a part of the fun!
