The VAD were a race that had previously lost their corporeal form due to a meeting with the Master.
Missy and the Monk arrived in the middle of a war between the VAD, who were now surviving by killing people and inhabiting their bodies, and the Kalvor. The two ended up separated and working for opposite sides, seemingly by happenstance. In actuality, Missy had orchestrated that the Monk, currently a disembodied brain in a bag, would find himself captured by the VAD. The VAD then inhabited the Monk's former body. As part of her plan, Missy then used the regenerative power from the Monk's corpse to flush the Prime VAD and any other connected VAD from existence, thus ending the war. (AUDIO: Body and Soulless)
