The Silurians tried destroying Earth's van Allen Belt using their molecular disperser so that the Sun's radiation would burn the humans to death whilst allowing the cold-blooded Silurians to survive. Liz Shaw overloaded the Silurians' disperser to stop them. (TV: Doctor Who and the Silurians)
