Veiled lantern

A veiled lantern was a type of lantern which contained an inner cylinder which the user could rotate to conceal its light.
It was made from sheet iron, with a holder for a candle inside and a hinged door. The door had a window made of horn in it through which the light would glow.
Guy Fawkes was said to have been carrying such a lantern when he was arrested in the cellars of the Houses of Parliament when the Gunpowder Plot was discovered. (GAME: The Gunpowder Plot [+]Loading...["The Gunpowder Plot (video game)"])
