Villengard smartmine
A Villengard smartmine was a type of smart land mine created by the Villengard Corporation, and used during the Anglican Marines' invasion of Kastarion 3. They took the form of a thin white disc with coloured lights around their edge, and a 'V' for Villengard.
According to John Francis Vater, the mines had the capability to migrate their position, meaning a minefield could appear where they were not present the previous day. The impact of stepping on the mine activated the mine's sensors, which subsequently scanned for any significant change to confirm the presence of a living target, indicated by the lights turning green around its edge. Criteria for detecting a living target included movement, changes in weight, blood pressure, and adrenaline. Once the side of the mine was lit fully green, the lights would turn red and it would explode its target. If the mine could not determine whether it had a viable target within a specified timeframe, it would fail safe and activate anyway. While there was no explosive in the mine, it caused immolation, triggering a quantum-level chain reaction in the subject's DNA, causing them to explode in blue light. The species of the target altered the size of the explosion, with Time Lord DNA able to blow up half a planet. Anyone too close to the mine when it went off would be caught in the blast. The mines were connected to the Villengard algorithm.
Carson was killed instantly after he fell into a crater and stepped backwards onto one of the mines. This alerted a Villengard Automated Ambulance Unit of combat, killing his partner John Francis Vater; Vater's scream alerted the Fifteenth Doctor, who himself stepped on one of the mines. Upon first stepping on the mine, the lights on its edge lit up so there was only four fingers' width of lights that were unlit. Due to his nature as a Time Lord who was also a Complex Space-Time Event, the Doctor's explosion would have destroyed half of the planet. The Doctor was able to escape, however, after an AI copy of Vater destroyed the Villengard algorithm, deactivating the mine and causing its speakers to repeat the word "kiss".
