William Squire (29 April 1917-3 May 1989[1]) played the Shadow in the Doctor Who television story The Armageddon Factor.

Squire had a distinguished career spanning theatre, film and television. A friend of Richard Burton's,[2] he took over his role as King Arthur in the Broadway musical Camelot, initially starring alongside Julie Andrews as Guinevere.[3]

He was best known for playing Hunter, the titular character's boss in Callan (1970-72). He made guest appearances in Blake's 7 and All Creatures Great and Small and voiced Gandalf in the animated version of The Lord of the Rings.

In 1967, Squire married Juliet Harmer of Adam Adamant fame.[4] This was his second marriage.[2]
