Jeanne-Antoinette "Reinette" Poisson, the future Madame de Pompadour, was supposed to dance with King Louis XV at the ball. After the Tenth Doctor saved her from a Clockwork Droid shortly before the ball began, Reinette persuaded him to attend as well despite his protests, stating she would make the king jealous before dancing with him.

At the ball, the Doctor got drunk and used his Zeus plugs as castanets. (TV: The Girl in the Fireplace ^[+]Loading...["The Girl in the Fireplace (TV story)"]) The banana daiquiri was also invented at the ball a few centuries too early, (PROSE: Time Traveller's Diary ^[+]Loading...["Time Traveller's Diary (novel)"]) due to the Doctor having a banana in his pocket.
