Mission: Impractical was the twelfth BBC Past Doctor Adventures novel. It was the first BBC Books novel to feature a character created in another medium - Frobisher, who first appeared in Doctor Who Magazine's comic stories alongside the Sixth Doctor and Seventh Doctor. Prior to this novel PROSE: Deceit had featured Abslom Daak who had also been created in DWM's comic stories. As the cover indicates this story also features Sabalom Glitz.
Publisher's summary

- Sha'Ol is a Tzun, while Kartakh is a Veltrochini, which makes their alliance a strange one. By this point, the Tzun Confederacy has been destroyed, but their technology is important to the plot of the story. The technology is, by this point, in Veltrochini hands.

- Elchur was an agrarian colony until biochemical weapons in an ancient war sterilised its surface.

- This was the first Doctor Who novel to take place between two issues of Doctor Who Magazine comic strips rather than two television serials.
- This was the first full-length story featuring Frobisher to be published in a non-comic medium.
Continuity
- Frobisher last appeared in COMIC: Where Nobody Knows Your Name, and also appears in audio in AUDIO: The Holy Terror and The Maltese Penguin.
- Dibber is killed, which explains his disappearance by TV: Dragonfire, and why the Doctor does not ask after him.
