Joy Jovanka was the mother of Tegan Jovanka and the daughter of Andrew Verney. At some point in her life, she was married to Tegan's father, William. (PROSE: Divided Loyalties)
When Tegan was a child, Joy took her to a corroboree, which gave her a recurring nightmare. (AUDIO: Psychodrome) She had grey hair from when Tegan was young. (PROSE: Good Companions)
When Kamelion tapped into Tegan's memories, he was overwhelmed by childhood memories of Tegan's parents and Aunt Vanessa, as well as the Fifth Doctor's memories of Gallifrey. (PROSE: Qualia)
Joy was still alive in 2006. On 22 September of that year, she telephoned her daughter to wish her a happy forty-sixth birthday. She wanted to pay Tegan a visit so they could celebrate together, but Tegan claimed she was too busy with work to fit her mother into her plans. She told her she was going to have a few drinks with her friends from work instead. (AUDIO: The Gathering)
