Vanessa (Logopolis)
Vanessa, also known as Nessa, was the aunt of Tegan Jovanka, who affectionately called her "Auntie Vanessa".

Vanessa, also known as Nessa for short, (PROSE: Qualia [+]Loading...["Qualia (short story)"]) was according to one account, the daughter of Andrew Verney and sister of Richard Frazer (PROSE: Divided Loyalties [+]Loading...["Divided Loyalties (novel)"]) and Joy Jovanka. (PROSE: Qualia [+]Loading...["Qualia (short story)"]) However according to another account, she was the sister of Brian Graham and Vince Graham. (PROSE: Little Did She Know [+]Loading...["Little Did She Know (short story)"]) She lived in London (TV: Logopolis [+]Loading...["Logopolis (TV story)"]) and kept Japanese knotweed in her garden. (AUDIO: Aquitaine [+]Loading...["Aquitaine (audio story)"]) After her niece, Tegan, was expelled from boarding school, Bill sent her to live with Vanessa. Tegan got bored of both London and Brisbane (PROSE: Goth Opera [+]Loading...["Goth Opera (novel)"]) and decided to become an air stewardess because of the glamour, (PROSE: The King of Terror [+]Loading...["The King of Terror (novel)"]) a job which Vanessa told her to give up should it ever stop being fun. (TV: Resurrection of the Daleks [+]Loading...["Resurrection of the Daleks (TV story)"]) On 28 February 1981, Vanessa intended to drive Tegan to her first day, but she had trouble getting her car to work and Tegan took the driving seat, only to get a flat tyre near the Barnet Bypass. Tegan abandoned the tyre she was rolling to a garage and entered the Master's TARDIS, which Vanessa eventually went to investigate. The Master then killed her with his Tissue Compression Eliminator. Vanessa's shrunken corpse, along with that of PC Donald Seagrave, was discovered in her car by a detective inspector and two uniformed police officers. The Fourth Doctor confirmed for Tegan that Vanessa was one of the Master's victims on Earth. (TV: Logopolis [+]Loading...["Logopolis (TV story)"])

The presence of a photograph of Vanessa in her cabin on Striker's yacht alerted Tegan to the fact her hosts had been reading her mind and using that information to make her cabin more homely and comfortable, a clue to their true nature as Eternals. Vanessa had several phrases that she often said, including not to trust a man with a beard as he had something to hide, (PROSE: Gudok [+]Loading...["Gudok (short story)"]) "once a wrong 'un, always a wrong 'un" (AUDIO: Cobwebs [+]Loading...["Cobwebs (audio story)"]) and to keep one's mouth shut if they had nothing nice to say.
