The Sceneshifters were an aspect of the Enemy. They existed beyond the apocalypse, beyond the singularity, in the Age of Steam, and sent agents into the past to ensure that the outcomes they wished would occur. The couple, a man and woman dressed in black, chose three agents of change for their agenda, three writers who didn't see a hard and fast distinction between ideas and the physical world.

Throughout their lives they subtly manipulated events to make them more successful, ensuring that they would continue to write, making sure an agent picked up a manuscript, encouraging one's interest in the occult, and so on. Even as they attempted to withdraw from public life and stop their properties from progressing, the sceneshifters had set things up so that this was impossible. Culture becoming increasingly fluid, so as to reach the boiling point, the Age of Steam, was their goal. (PROSE: The Enemy of My Enemy Is My Enemy)
