During the First World War, Josiah Rowe's grandfather was an American Army Air Corps pilot stationed in a base in Foggia, Italy. There, the Ninth Doctor was pictured in the background of a photograph taken by Josiah's grandfather of his fellow pilots, ingratiated himself with the CO, and stole a Spad XIII.
