As K9 and Starkey make their way by the [[River Thames]] to Fish Starkey explains Fishing to K9 who considers it Inefficent as he could easily take out all the fish with his Photon Beam. Two CCPCs then halt them, asking them what they are doing. K9 then explains fishing to them, they like K9 don't understand it and go. As Starkey and K9 arrive they find several fish dead on the floor. As Starkey prepares to touch it, K9 warns him not to as he has detected an unknown alien substance. Starkey then manages to swipe one of the dead fish with his net which accidently hits K9, causing some of his body to sparkle red. At the Gryffen House Jorjie is singing to some music and she elbows Darius who is carrying a pile of books. Gryffen then spots him, Darius tells him the books could be interesting to look at but he obviously isn't telling the truth. Gryffen asks him if he was going to sell the books, Darius denies it but Gryffen tells him to pick them up and take them back to the Library.

Starkey picks one up with his fishing net so he can bring it back to the Manor to analyse and accidentally bumps K9 with the fish. This causes a corrosive spot to start on K9. At [[Gryffen Manor]], Jorjie sings along to music and accidentally elbows Darius, who is carrying a pile of books. Gryffen asks him if he was going to sell the books. Darius denies it, but Gryffen tells him to take them back to the library. Jorjie starts singing again and Gryffen has to raise his voice to get her attention to tell her to keep it down.

Darius comes in and tells them of his encounter with the aliens, and questions the weird sparkling on K9. Gryffen takes a look at it. Starkey finds a match ,[[Chenium]] a corrosive byproduct from the manufacture of [[Qualon 37]], used in the manufacture of inter-dimensional starships. K9 then estimates if it builds up in the food chain, 85% of life in the Thames Valley will die.

In June's office Drake is talking to a CCPC through a Department computer, who tells him the prisoners are withholding information they need, Drake orders them to be more persuasive. June arrives and asks why he's here and speaks to him about his special security unit. She tells him how she sent her squad to investigate possible alien activity but were turned back by Drake's unit. She warns that alien threats are above all other Department operations, and if her squad is blocked again she will inform LOMAXX. Drake is then contacted by the CCPC who tells him the aliens won't stop talking, Drake then tells June he won't "upset" her squad again. He then tells her he has business to attend to, she then leaves.

When he complains about his eyes they take him to Gryffen's house where Gryffen takes a look and determines it to be a strong case of vertigo and that his eyesight will return to normal soon. Starkey tells Jorjie he is fine but Gryffen gets him a bucket ("Just in Case") when he starts to feel sick. When Darius asks who the aliens that appeared were, K9 looks them up on his file. He recognises them as the Medes, a species that can project themselves as Avatars when they cannot psyhically be in a certain area. They decide to go to the source of the pollution, although Darius has doubts. K9 goes through the drains as Darius and Jorjie follow him through the streets, Gryffen and Starkey monitor them.
K9 and the team find where the toxin is entering the river. Starkey sees the aliens. They knock him to the ground and disappear. Back at Gryffen's house, K9 looks up the aliens in his file. They are the [[Mede]]s, a species who can project their images as avatars if they cannot physically be present. The team decide to go to the pollution's source. K9 goes through the drains as Darius and Jorjie track him through the streets and Gryffen and Starkey monitor them.


K9 feels uncomfortable and his transmission starts to break up. In Drake's office June finds the missing schematics for a Fallen Angel on his computer. When Drake arrive she asks him his interest in the ship, he replies the entire Department wants to know where its located. When she asks him about the featured detail on the top, he replies he has no idea and tells her to leave as he has business to attend to. Before she does so she warns him he best not be revealed to be in possession of the ship. Drake then contacts the CCPC who tells him the aliens aren't cooperating, Drake then authorises the use of torture. June then goes to Gryffen's house and contacts him, he then goes downstairs to meet her. She shows him a blueprint of the Mede starship and the molecular refractor on the top, she tells him Drake is exploiting it. She goes on to tell him that its Drake and not the Department who is using this, Gryffen says why as Drake is head of security. She tells him that the molecular refractor gives the ship the ability to dematerialise and with this he could use it to spy anywhere and not be seen by anyone, even LOMAXX.

As K9 searches he tells Darius and Jorjie the fumes are interfering with his inertial compass, Jorjie then spots a factory. They both make their way to there, Jorjie contacts Starkey who tells her Gryffen is talking to her mother downstairs. Jorjie wonders wether she should press on, Starkey tells her to do so. Jorjie then moves on, as Darius slowly follows. Gryffen and June analyse a image of the Mede Avatar, the Avatar is nowhere to be seen in infa-red vision. Gryffen wonders why the Medes project themselves when the can dissapear and reappear, June suggests its due to the abscence of the refractor. When Starkey insists Gryffen tells June the situation, Gryffen informs her that Darius, Jorjie and K9 are looking for the source of the pollution in North West 12. June then contacts her and warns her to get out but she and Darius are apprehended by CCPCs.
The gang spots a factory. Gryffen and June analyse an image of the Mede avatar which cannot be seen in infrared. Starkey insists that Gryffen tell June the situation. Gryffen informs her that Darius, Jorjie and K9 are looking for the source of the pollution in North West 12. June contacts Jorjie and warns her to get out, but she and Darius are caught by CCPCs.


June decides to go there, Starkey follows but Gryffen warns he must not go because he hasn't fully recovered. As Gryffen tries to stop Starkey, Starkey leaves the house and Gryffens Agoraphobia kicks in, causing him to shut the door. Darius and Jorjie are tied up, Darius tries to break free by gnawing at Jorjie's rope. While searching, K9 calls out if anyone is responding. Gryffen responds but can't understand him, K9 then sees the Medes as Avatars. They tell him to come with them, he responds in their language, they take him to the source of the pollution. He enters the factory and spots the workers casting the Chenium, and finds Darius and Jorjie and blasts their rope. They run but are met by a CCPC, they turn the other way while K9 blasts it. Darius and Jorjie get the gates and are captured. June then interrupts with a command override, the CCPCs then take the workers away.
Darius and Jorjie are tied up in the factory, where Drake's men are experimenting with the refractor. K9 sees the Medes' avatars, who tell him to come with them. He replies in their language. They take him to the factory, the source of the pollution, where he sees the workers casting chenium. He finds Darius and Jorjie and frees them. Darius and Jorjie are recaptured. June arrives, takes control of the CCPCs, and the CCPCs take the workers away.


Starkey meets up with K9, who asks him to help him deliver the molecular refractor to the Medes. K9 tells June that Drake had the Medes locked up, K9,Starkey and June then visit the Medes in their cell. She gives them the refractor and apologises the what Drake did to them and informs them they are free to go. The Medes then reply that they need to do one more thing before they leave, and that thing is to clean up the pollution. They also repair the damage to K9 and leave in their ship. After noting the "Awesome" day they had, Starkey asks K9 if he wants to go fishing. K9 cheerfully refuses and chuckles along with Jorjie.
K9 asks Starkey to help him deliver the molecular refractor to the Medes and tells June that Drake had the Medes locked up. K9, Starkey and June gives the Medes the refractor, apologise for what Drake did to them and let them go. The Medes clean up the pollution and repair the damage to K9 before they leave in their ship. It is blatantly obvious, especially as the characters are at the river side, that they're not anywhere close to the [[Thames]]. Tropical trees can easily be seen on the other side of the river, and the wide shots don't reveal any architecture that even slightly resembles London. Much of the action also takes place under a bridge that runs parallel to the river — something that doesn't exist in [[London]].

As they make their way to the River Thames, Starkey explains fishing to K9. Two CCPCs ask them what they are doing and K9 explains fishing to them. Starkey and K9 arrive to find dead fish. K9 warns him not to touch them, as he has detected an unknown alien substance. Starkey picks one up with his fishing net so he can bring it back to the Manor to analyse and accidentally bumps K9 with the fish. This causes a corrosive spot to start on K9. At Gryffen Manor, Jorjie sings along to music and accidentally elbows Darius, who is carrying a pile of books. Gryffen asks him if he was going to sell the books. Darius denies it, but Gryffen tells him to take them back to the library. Jorjie starts singing again and Gryffen has to raise his voice to get her attention to tell her to keep it down.

As Darius goes to the library, he sees two aliens appear and vanish. At Gryffen house, Starkey takes readings of the toxin in the dead fish. It is extraterrestrial. Starkey finds a match: the toxin is chenium, a corrosive byproduct of the manufacture of Qualon 37, used in the making of inter-dimensional starships. K9 estimates that if it builds up in the food chain, 85% of life in the Thames Valley will die.

In June's office, Drake orders a CCPC to be more persuasive. June tells him she sent her squad to investigate possible alien activity, but they were turned back by Drake's unit. Drake is contacted by the CCPC, who tells him the aliens won't stop talking. Drake tells June he won't "upset" her squad again. He has business to attend to. She leaves.

K9 and the team find where the toxin is entering the river. Starkey sees the aliens. They knock him to the ground and disappear. Back at Gryffen's house, K9 looks up the aliens in his file. They are the Medes, a species who can project their images as avatars if they cannot physically be present. The team decide to go to the pollution's source. K9 goes through the drains as Darius and Jorjie track him through the streets and Gryffen and Starkey monitor them.

K9's transmission starts to break up. In Drake's office, June finds the missing schematics for a Fallen Angel on his computer. When Drake arrives, she asks him about his interest in the ship. Before he leaves, she warns that he better not be in possession of the ship. June goes to Gryffen's house, where she shows him a blueprint of the Mede starship and the molecular refractor on the top, telling him Drake, not the Department, is exploiting it. The molecular refractor allows the ship to dematerialise and with this he could spy anywhere and not be seen.

The gang spots a factory. Gryffen and June analyse an image of the Mede avatar which cannot be seen in infrared. Starkey insists that Gryffen tell June the situation. Gryffen informs her that Darius, Jorjie and K9 are looking for the source of the pollution in North West 12. June contacts Jorjie and warns her to get out, but she and Darius are caught by CCPCs.

Darius and Jorjie are tied up in the factory, where Drake's men are experimenting with the refractor. K9 sees the Medes' avatars, who tell him to come with them. He replies in their language. They take him to the factory, the source of the pollution, where he sees the workers casting chenium. He finds Darius and Jorjie and frees them. Darius and Jorjie are recaptured. June arrives, takes control of the CCPCs, and the CCPCs take the workers away.

K9 asks Starkey to help him deliver the molecular refractor to the Medes and tells June that Drake had the Medes locked up. K9, Starkey and June gives the Medes the refractor, apologise for what Drake did to them and let them go. The Medes clean up the pollution and repair the damage to K9 before they leave in their ship. After noting the "awesome" day they had, Starkey asks K9 if he wants to go fishing. K9 cheerfully refuses.

With the exception of Leeson's credit, they are credited only by their name and not with their respective character's name attached.   • This episode aired on the same day as the Doctor Who episode TV: Flesh and Stone.
  • This episode establishes that the reason K9 Mark 2's language is laced with so much English slang is that the five thousand Earth movies on his memdrive have influenced his mode of expression.
  • This episode definitively establishes that K9 has some sort of on-board linguistic database, as he talks to the Medes. This point was never particularly clear in his usage in Doctor Who, since he would have ostensibly had access to the Doctor's TARDIS translation circuit. Moreover, he's never been shown to use other languages in The Sarah Jane Adventures.
