Wolsey was a large tomcat with tabby markings. He was a capable hunter and utterly disdainful of human beings. He originally belonged to Joan Redfern who at first knew the Seventh Doctor only as the human John Smith. She gave Wolsey to the Seventh Doctor to "guard" him. (PROSE: Human Nature)
When left alone in the Doctor's TARDIS, such as when the Doctor and companions were exploring The System, Wolsey spent his time exploring the vessel, clawing things to shreds, drinking from a stream that ran through one of the corridors, and eating from a food machine that he could activate with his head.
