Publisher's summary[[edit] | [edit source]]
Oh dear. That wasn't meant to happen.
Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Doctor and Keira find that a massive wall has been built around Bristol and use the psychic paper to enter the gate. The city is inhabited by both humans and aliens and the technology, which includes a Calandran transit station, is a combination of the primitive and futuristic. Returning to the TARDIS, the Doctor confirms that Keira's jump through the Time Vortex and her actions on Calandra have caused a fracture which is compressing the histories of that planet and Earth.
The Doctor detects an anomaly along the fracture at the Battle of Crécy in 1346 and heads there with Keira, finding that tanks and weapons are emerging through a split in time. He puts together a temporal shock grenade which closes the split and they leave after a soldier, believing them to be working for the King, accuses them of using witchcraft. They close splits in the Victoria and Albert Intergalactic Spaceport in Old Dundee, a 1950s Arctic research station, pre-historic Ethiopia and a saloon before going to Newground.
Pennou gives the Doctor and Keira a tour of Newground, which contains a number of exhibits of anachronistic artefacts and materials, including a sculpture showing the destruction of the city by a waterspout. Despite it being decades early, the waterspout approaches the city and Pennou leaves to join his family. The Doctor and Keira close the split and run to the TARDIS, seeing on the way that Pennou and others have been caught in a self-sustaining time loop. In Bath in 1830, they briefly encounter Havilland and manage to close another split, although it takes longer than the previous ones.
The Doctor returns Keira's vortex manipulator to her and sends her to close the final split, which is twice as unstable as the others and, as a result, impossible for the TARDIS to materialise near without being torn apart. She succeeds and returns to the TARDIS, believing that she saw someone moving in the split despite the Doctor saying that that could not be the case. With the tear stabilised, they travel to Calandra and look for Vetch, but are told that nobody by that name works there. They then return to the TARDIS and are greeted by another version of Keira.
