Matthew Crane was a technician at Torchwood One in 2007, where he worked on the free energy project with Adeola Oshodi.
Crane was lured by Adeola over to the work area, where he was cybernetically altered by Cybermen. They had crossed the Void through a breach in space-time. His upgrade was internal, through a modified Torchwood earpiece linked by connective tissue directly to his brain. He was killed definitively when his earpieces were overloaded by a signal from the Tenth Doctor. (TV: Army of Ghosts)
