Robert Catesby was the mastermind behind the Gunpowder Plot of November 1605.
Catesby was born a Catholic. He claimed to have faced intolerance all his life.
In 1601, Catesby joined the Earl of Essex in rebellion against Elizabeth I, the Queen of England. As a result of this, he was imprisoned, fined 4,000 marks and also lost his estate.
In the years that followed, he planned the removal of the Protestant Monarch. His intention was to blow up Parliament, killing James I in order to put Princess Elizabeth on the throne as a puppet Catholic monarch. He hoped the oppressed Catholics would then rise up and flock behind them. He gathered likeminded individuals, including Guy Fawkes and Thomas Percy, and prepared to put his plan in action.
In 1605, he met with the Eleventh Doctor, who had infiltrated the Catholic plotters. Fooled by the Doctor's credentials (in reality psychic paper), he asked the Doctor, who was secretly stopping this plot, to give him a sleeping draught to use on the young Elizabeth when they kidnapped her. Missy met up with him in her plan to make the Gunpowder Plot go right, and hypnotised him. She gave him and his plotters a fitness regime. As part of Missy's plan he became more involved with the explosives side of the plot. (AUDIO: Treason and Plot)
