The Para-Nestene (COMIC: Vortex Butterflies) or Nestene-like were a version of the Nestene Consciousness from an alternate universe. Rather than manipulate plastic, they learned to control biodata. (COMIC: Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth)

History

They fell into the Doctor's universe after the boundaries had been weakened by Sutekh, (COMIC: Breakfast at Tyranny's, Sharper Than a Serpent's Tooth) and attacked the Tenth Doctor, Cindy Wu, Gabby Gonzalez and Noobis, dragging them into a simulated reality as it attempted to create living duplicates out of them. The four escaped before the Para-Nestene could succeed, but by the time that the four escaped from the Nestene's fortress it had already scanned and duplicated the TARDIS. It grabbed Cindy, escaping into the Vortex with her. (COMIC: Breakfast at Tyranny's)

The three remaining quickly followed after the Para-Nestene's time-ship in the TARDIS, executing a time ram which forced both of them to land in ancient China. The Nestene disguised themselves as a red general and offered to help the locals build a dam to stop destruction from a local river, but soon began experimenting on the citizens. Learning to change DNA like their counterparts changed plastic, they rebuilt all of the locals to be genetically identical to Cindy Wu, including not being able to remember their former lives. They also created various Elementals, creatures of Earth, wind, fire and wood, which protected the Para-Nestene's palace.

As the Doctor, Gabby and Noobis arrived in China, they quickly discovered the Para-Nestene's plan and infiltrated their palace. There they discovered the many duplicates of Cindy, and the Doctor made the connection that the species that they were battling was an alternate-universe version of his universe's Nestenes. The Doctor finally was granted an audience with the Red Jade General, who had transported the TARDIS to his palace so that their own time ship could pull energy from the ship to heal following their time ram. However, the Doctor had taken the time to change the exterior of the ship to Anti-plasma, and due to the activation of the Hostile Action Displacement System, the Para-Nestene and their time ship was dragged into the heart of the Time Vortex and destroyed. After the collapse of the Para-Nestene's palace, the group was not able to find any evidence of the Para-Nestene's survival. Upon scoping the area, the Doctor noted that the Para-Nestene were trying to build a Interstellar Comms Array, and speculated upon what would have happened if the Para-Nestene had been able to make contact with the Nestenes of their universe, thus spreading what they had learned to a larger faction.
