The Five Doctors Special Edition is an adapted version of The Five Doctors. Among the many things changed is that new scenes were added that were cut from the original version bringing the runtime up to about 100 minutes. In addition some other scenes were reordered to match the script. It was the first Doctor Who story to be released on DVD in 1999 and was re-released as a special feature on disc two of the original version's DVD release in 2008 to mark the episode's 25th anniversary.

- Previously other edited versions of The Five Doctors have been released such as a four part version and an cut down version with two minutes missing of original material.
- When the Fourth Doctor was returned to his proper place in space and time, a different clip from Shada was used, this time to suggest that the events of the televised story could indeed have occurred.
