Eventually, Tommy was killed by a German bullet, leaving the private as the sole survivor of his group. One week after Tommy's death, sixteen months into the war, the private was offered the opportunity to travel with the Seventh Doctor. The soldier turned the Doctor down, believing it to be desertion.
