Solicitor Grey was Royal Commissioner of Prisons during the Jacobite Rising and abused his position to sell captured Jacobites as slaves in the West Indies.

Biography[[edit] | [edit source]]

Grey was a solicitor who had a successful legal practice at Lincoln's Inn Fields (TV: The Highlanders [+]Loading...["The Highlanders (TV story)"]) and spent years pleading cases in court, resulting in his voice becoming sharp. (PROSE: The Highlanders [+]Loading...["The Highlanders (novelisation)"]) He left his practice to serve as George III's Commissioner of Prisons, a role to which he was appointed by the Lord Chief Justice, but secretly he planned to use this position to sell captured Jacobites into slavery. Travelling to Scotland, he employed the help of Trask, who took control of the Annabelle from Willie Mackay to transport the future slaves to Barbados.

On 16 April 1746, Grey watched the Battle of Culloden with Cedric Perkins, his clerk, and afterwards bribed Sergeant Klegg into placing the Second Doctor, Ben Jackson, Jamie McCrimmon and Colin McLaren into his custody to be sold. He allowed the Doctor to tend to the injured Colin in the hopes that he would make a full recovery, but the Doctor proceeded to trick him with a story about the whereabouts of Bonnie Prince Charlie and locked him in a cupboard whilst he escaped. Once Trask freed him, he blackmailed many of the captured Jacobites into signing seven year indentures with threats of imprisonment and execution.

Grey had Trask handcuff Ben after he ripped up his documents and subject him to ducking as a deterrent to the Highlanders, a punishment which Ben managed to escape. Grey ordered Perkins to accompany Trask on the voyage to Barbados and to find him him in London at the end of October and was going to leave the ship when the Doctor again tricked him by claiming that Jamie was Prince Charles in disguise and the Highlanders rose up. He briefly managed to escape, but the Doctor, Ben and Jamie convinced Algernon Ffinch to arrest him. (TV: The Highlanders [+]Loading...["The Highlanders (TV story)"])
