Blackmail was a crime involving threats to reveal information to the public or legal authorities unless paid.


Sean Harris tried to blackmail Ed Morgan after he saw him murder Lizzie Lewis using a quantum transducer. Morgan refused and assumed Owen Harper was also after money when he told Morgan he also knew. (TV: Ghost Machine)

Using Lois Habiba's film as leverage, Torchwood Three blackmailed the British government to give them access to Thames House in 2009. (TV: Children of Earth: Day Four)

Shortly after meeting them, when a broken spring in the fast return switch caused an explosion in the TARDIS, the First Doctor accused Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright of sabotaging his ship to blackmail him into returning them to 1960s England. When Angie and Artie Maitland discovered historical records of Clara Oswald's time travel, they used it to blackmail their nanny into taking them in a trip in the TARDIS. (TV: The Crimson Horror) Later, Clara tried to trick the Twelfth Doctor into undoing Danny Pink's death by blackmailing she'd throw the TARDIS keys into lava, unaware that the Doctor had anticipated this and used a sleep patch on her to see how far her grief would push her to go. During the Last Great Time War, Type VIII Daleks, including the Time Strategist, discovered the realm of the Enigma, taking several of the race hostage to blackmail one of them into using its powers over N-Space to remove Gallifrey from history.
