NATO

The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) was an Earth-based organisation.

History[[edit] | [edit source]]

20th century[[edit] | [edit source]]

It was developed in the late 1940s after World War II. United States President Harry Truman played a leading role in its formation following his re-election in 1948. (PROSE: Endgame)

In July 1966, NATO was among the computer systems which were to be connected to WOTAN on C-Day on 16 July, an event which was ultimately cancelled following WOTAN's failed attempt to take over London. (TV: The War Machines)

Harry Sullivan worked for NATO after leaving the Doctor. (TV: Mawdryn Undead)

The Brigadier contacted him for UNIT. (AUDIO: The Wasting)

A rogue NATO commander was killed by an Ogri in Little Caldwell. This stopped NATO from discovering that the commander was responsible for abducting both aliens and humans. (PROSE: Return of the Living Dad)

21st century[[edit] | [edit source]]

On 25 December 2006, AMNN reported that NATO forces were on red alert following the image of the Sycorax was captured by the Guinevere One space probe. (TV: The Christmas Invasion)

In October 2007, Owen Harper speculated that Jack Harkness was calling NATO about the alien warning device Torchwood Three had in its possession. (PROSE: Border Princes)

In the 2000s,[nb 1] a NATO satellite covered Western Europe, including the British Isles. (TV: Warriors of Kudlak)

In the 2000s,[nb 2] clone of Martha Jones created by the Sontarans used the memories of her counterpart to access the NATO Defence System and cancel attacks made against the Sontaran ship in orbit above the Earth. (TV: The Poison Sky)

In approximately the 2000s,[nb 3] a member of the Master Race transformed from a UNIT officer at UNIT HQ in Geneva had all NATO defenses coordinated and placed under the command of the Saxon Master, who ordered missiles launched against the Hesperus. (TV: The End of Time)

NATO insisted that the Prime Minister resort to military options to prevent the spread of the Identical Men's pulses from Embankment tube station. Despite Bertram telling her that it would be pointless, the Prime Minister bombed Central London. (AUDIO: The Destructive Quality of Life)

Footnotes[[edit] | [edit source]]

  1. No on screen date is given for the first two series of The Sarah Jane Adventures, outside of The Day of the Clown from the second series being set shortly after 9 October in an undisclosed year. While Donna Noble's present from the fourth series of Doctor Who is set around the same time as the first series of The Sarah Jane Adventures, and The Temptation of Sarah Jane Smith from the second series of The Sarah Jane Adventures is explicitly described as being set a year after Whatever Happened to Sarah Jane? from the first series, Doctor Who's fourth series is not consistently dated, with TV: The Fires of Pompeii, TV: The Waters of Mars, and AUDIO: SOS setting the present of the 13 regular episodes in 2008 (heavily implied by TV: The Star Beast and TV: The Giggle as well), and PROSE: Beautiful Chaos setting them in about April to June 2009.
  2. The present day of Doctor Who's fourth series is not consistently dated, with TV: The Fires of Pompeii, TV: The Waters of Mars, and AUDIO: SOS setting the present of the 13 regular episodes in 2008 (heavily implied by TV: The Star Beast and TV: The Giggle as well), and PROSE: Beautiful Chaos setting them in about April to June 2009.
  3. Both Planet of the Dead and The End of Time are referred to in dialogue as taking place after the end of Journey's End, which is set in either 2008, according to TV: The Fires of Pompeii, TV: The Waters of Mars, and AUDIO: SOS (and heavily implied by TV: The Star Beast and TV: The Giggle), or six weeks after the middle of May 2009, circa June, according to PROSE: Beautiful Chaos. However, the year of The End of Time is unspecified, as is whether or not it is intended to be the Christmas immediately after Journey's End.
